Below are some pics of my T56 rebuild.  Its a fairly daunting task as there are so many parts, but its not that bad. As a "transmission stand" I used 2 4x4s stacked for each "leg" of my stand. I used the GM service manual as a guide for repairs.   Basically, remove the tailhousing, remove stuff, then you can slide the whole housing off the lower parts.  Trans shop wanted a minimum of $300 to work on my trans. I fixed mine twice, for <$20.
